Minnesota has an illustrious brewing history, and just as rich and colorful as our much more famous neighbor; Wisconsin. Today's craft beer explosion will see the year end with over 100 breweries operating in Minnesota. But, that was nothing. Before Prohibition there were almost 300 breweries producing their ales and lagers in the state of Minnesota and St. Paul was the leader with 12 breweries operating at one time, greatly reflecting the early predominant German population. Southern Minnesota also had a heavy Germany population and places like Rochester and New Ulm were filled with family owned breweries. Chaska had nine breweries operating at one time, and Jordan was another hotbed for breweries. And, if you want to talk about progressive, Minnesota had a number of breweries owned by women; Caroline Merz in St. Cloud, Antoinette Minette in Sauk Centre, Catherine Becker in Watertown, Annie Hertz in Carver, Bina Englehorn in Granger, Mary Leslin in Wabasha and Johanna Wurm right here in Saint Paul produced wonderful beers. Here we have assembled probably the most comprehensive list of the founding fathers of Minnesota Brewing available and we've searched every Historical Society in the state looking for pictures and labels. We hope you enjoy.
